Cats in Islamic Culture (Part I)

“The grammarian Ibn Babshad was sitting with his friends on the roof of a mosque in Cairo, eating some food. When a cat passed by they gave her some morsels; she took them and ran away, only to come back time and time again. The scholars followed her and saw her running to an adjacent house on whose roof a blind cat was sitting. The cat carefully placed the morsels in front of her. Bashbad was so moved by God’s caring for the blind creature that he gave up all his belongings and lived in poverty, completely trusting in God until he died in 1067 (oral tradition recorded in the late 14th century by the Egyptian theologian and zoologist Damiri (d. 1405)” (Lorraine Chittock, Cats of Cairo, p. 40).

K-pop guide to Muslims: Animal Rights in Islam

That’s Jun Ji Hyun and actress Jung Ryu Won dressed in green Rudolph the Reindeer costumes. Speaking of animals, people usually associate animal rights with hippies but there are many people of faith (hippies and non-hippies) out there who are concerned about animal rights and draw inspiration from their faith. Many Muslims like UMM lol Cats (see I told you not all of us are hippies) are also included in this category. Here are some references to support our position in Islam. Thus the beloved prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stated “If someone kills a sparrow for sport, the sparrow will cry out on the Day of Judgment, “O Lord! That person killed me in vain! He did not kill me for any useful purpose.” (Nisai). The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever kills a sparrow or anything bigger than that without a just cause, Allah will hold him accountable on the Day of Judgment.” The listeners asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what is a just cause?” He replied, “That he will kill it to eat, not simply to chop off its head and then throw it away.”
(Nisai, Hakim).

K-pop guide to Muslims: Yun Eun Hye and the Environment

Here is Yun Eun Hye wearing a T-shirt in support of the environment. She started her career as a pop singer in the group Baby V.O.X. but later moved to acting which has proved to be more successful. Despite initial skepticism her role in the drama Princess Hour was able to win over her critics. So she is not just another pretty face. Speaking of environment, environmentalism is not something which people usually associate with Islam or with prophet Muhammad (pbuh) but there are ample examples from the life and saying of prophet Muhammad (pbuh) that can bolster the claim for an Islamic idea of environmentalism. Consider the following sayings of prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

  • “No Muslim, who plants a shoot, except that whatever is eaten or stolen from it, or anyone obtains the least thing from it, is considered [like paying] almsgiving on his behalf until the Day of Judgment.” (sahih Muslim)
  • “There is reward in [caring for] every living being.” (sahih Muslim)
  • “Faith is some seventy branches, the highest of which is “There is no god but God, and the least is removing obstacles from the path of people. (sahih Bukhari and sahih Muslim)

It makes me wonder, we do see the effects of urban sprawl run amok in many parts of the Muslim world and environmental degradation also. We should learn from the example of the prophet (pbuh).

Hi I am a Muslim and I Would Like To Apologize For ….

A Bengali in Toronto posted this gem of a piece at his blog not too long ago. Be sure to click on the links to see what he means.

Hi, I am a Muslim.

And today, I would like to apologize for:

[x] Killing a female relative for committing a sin

[x] Punishing a rape victim

[x] Rioting over perceived insults to the Prophet

[x] Blowing up buildings to make a political point

[x] Calling for ban on offensive books, ideas and symbols

[x] Believing that my holy book gives me the right to beat my wife

[x] Clerics treating women and children as ‘uncovered meat’

Thank you.

Muslim Stuffed Toys

Ok, ok, stuffed toys don’t have any religion. I discovered this really cool site via Ali’s basement. Its called Muslim Teddy Bears. According to the website here is why the site was conceived. was born from a desire by the Muslim community to show their solidarity with Gillian Gibbons, a British school teacher who was unjustly imprisoned on November 28, 2007, when a student in her class named a teddy bear, Muhammad. The Sudanese authorities, citing local laws against religious defamation arrested Ms. Gibbons, and charged her under Section 125 of the Sudanese Criminal Act, for “insulting religion, inciting hatred, and showing contempt for religious beliefs.” It is opinion of millions of Muslims worldwide that Ms. Gibbons did not insult the religious sensibilities of Muslims by what transpired in her classroom. Moreover, the response of the Sudanese officials is not just “insulting” to the Islamic faith, it shows the greatest “contempt” for the sacred memory of the Prophet Muhammad, upon whom may be peace.

So basically the site was born as a mean to show solidarity with the British teacher Gillian Gibbons. The non-issue was blown out of proportions for no reason. I was heartbroken to hear that some Muslims were asking for the teacher to be killed. This is not the Islam that attracted me in the first place and some of the Sudanese Ulemas reacted in a not so moderate manner, “What has happened was not haphazard or carried out of ignorance, but rather a calculated action and another ring in the circles of plotting against Islam.” Muslims are supposed to respect the scholars so I will just say, “With scholars like these who needs enemies.” This is not Islam but rather manipulation of religion for political gains. Anyway I think the website is a great idea and I encourage people of all faiths and inclinations to support the site.

To my overzealous brothers and sisters, please don’t take this to mean that Islam is the fastest growing religion amongst stuffed toys. lol
